Classification and characteristics of commercial and household materials for door mats

Publish Time: 2026-02-03     Origin: Site

As a basic home product, the core differences and performance of door mats are mainly determined by their materials. Different raw materials and processing techniques endow products with vastly different physical characteristics and usage scenarios. The following is a classification of door mat systems based on materials science.

1、 Synthetic fibers

Made mainly from petroleum derivatives through chemical synthesis and spinning processes.

(1)Nylon door mat

Main features: Excellent wear resistance and resilience, high fiber strength, and good alkali resistance. Strong anti pollution ability, but long-term exposure to sunlight can easily lead to slow fading.

Common processes: Plucking and needle punching techniques are commonly used, and the surface can be treated with cutting or looping, resulting in a dense structure.

(2)Polyester (polyester fiber) door mat

Main features: Excellent deformation recovery ability and color fastness, resistant to light and not easily faded. Poor moisture absorption, but easy to wash and dry quickly, with wear resistance second only to nylon.

Common process: Due to its stable dyeing performance, it is the main carrier for digital printing and complex pattern presentation.

(3)Polypropylene (polypropylene) door mat

Main features: Light texture, extremely hydrophobic, almost non absorbent. Mold proof and resistant to chemical corrosion, but with a hard touch and average heat aging resistance.

Common process: commonly used for manufacturing outdoor sand scraping pads, mainly with flat weave or jacquard structure.

2、 Natural materials and blends

Derived from natural animal and plant fibers, emphasizing environmental protection and biodegradability.

(1)Cotton door mat

Main features: Natural cellulose fiber, moisture absorption and breathability, soft and skin friendly touch. Wet strength is higher than dry strength, making it easy for bacteria to grow in humid environments.

Common processes: mostly for woven or knitted products, which can be processed through post finishing such as quilting and shearing.

(2)Coconut/sisal doormat

Main features: Made of plant hard fibers, with a rigid structure and strong physical sand and dust removal ability, extremely durable, and naturally resistant to mold. The touch is rough.

Common process: The fibers are sorted and fixed with a mesh base cloth to form a hard flat plate structure.

3、 Functional innovation and composite materials

Achieve specific functional breakthroughs through material science innovation or composite technology.

(1)Ultra fine fiber door mat

Main characteristics: The fiber diameter is extremely small (usually<5 microns), forming a huge specific surface area, thus possessing super strong water absorption and pollutant holding capacity. Soft and delicate to the touch.

Common process: Ultra fine yarns are made from polyester or nylon substrates through special spinning, and processed into high-density velvet.

(2)Diatom soil cushion

Main characteristics: The main component is diatom sedimentary rock, with nanoscale micro pore channels inside, extremely fast moisture absorption rate, and the ability to naturally evaporate water. The texture is hard and brittle.

Common process: The mixture of diatomaceous earth powder and binder is pressed and formed, then sintered and solidified. The surface is often glazed or embossed.

(3)Rubber/PVC composite bottom back

Main features: As a functional bottom layer, it provides high friction coefficient to achieve anti slip, while also having buffering and floor protection functions. Rubber has better environmental friendliness and PVC has lower cost.

Common process: The surface material is firmly bonded to the anti slip backing through flame composite, adhesive or hot melt processes.

Integration of comprehensive perspective and manufacturer capabilities

The selection of door mat material is essentially a comprehensive consideration of its physical properties, usage scenarios, and maintenance costs. From highly wear-resistant synthetic fibers to environmentally friendly and skin friendly natural materials, and then to moisture absorbing and quick drying functional materials, the diversified material system provides a complete solution spectrum for the market. As a professional floor mat manufacturer, RATO comprehensively covers the production and research and development of various materials mentioned above. Based on different functional requirements and design orientations, RATO can provide complete material application solutions from standard products to customized ones, ensuring a high degree of unity between product performance and design throughout its lifecycle.
